Much has been written and studied about vitamin D and it’s positive health benefits. Most Americans are deficient in vitamin D and I suspect this had to do with the barrage of marketing that tells us that the sun will give you cancer today and you’ll be dead tomorrow so pile on this chemical bath and get cancer from us instead. Of course some people have predisposed conditions that cause them to have to limit their exposure to Mr. Flaming Ball of Fire. However, in my opinion, and the facts of other more scholarly people, you can boost health benefits by soaking on the sun’s rays on a daily basis within reason. Now that the heat has arrived it will be easier and easier for me to get out in the sun and convert some vitamin D. Last week I found a new spot to roast my buns. It’s got a great view of the Mojave Desert and it’s just a 45 minute bike ride from my abode. Here is a shot of me building up sun love for later converting vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D or calcidiol . Your body also converts “the physiologically active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], also known as calcitriol”*1 from your kidneys.
